Insulated Plasterboards

Insulated plasterboards, often referred to as thermal laminates or insulated drylining boards, are a highly efficient and versatile building material designed to significantly enhance the thermal performance of internal walls and ceilings. They are a composite product, integrating the familiar finish of gypsum plasterboard with a rigid layer of thermal insulation.

Typically, an insulated plasterboard comprises two main components factory-bonded together:

  • Gypsum Plasterboard: This forms the durable, smooth inner surface, ready for skimming, painting, or wallpapering. It contributes to fire resistance and offers a standard drylining finish.
  • Rigid Insulation Layer: Bonded to the rear face of the plasterboard, this layer provides the primary thermal performance. Common insulation materials used include:
    • PIR (Polyisocyanurate): Known for its excellent thermal efficiency (low U-values) in a relatively thin profile. Often includes a foil facing for improved performance and as a vapour control layer.
    • EPS (Expanded Polystyrene): A more economical option, offering good thermal performance and lightweight characteristics.
    • Phenolic Foam: Offers very high thermal performance, often used where space is extremely limited.
    • Mineral Wool: Provides good thermal and acoustic properties, and is non-combustible.

Key Benefits

  • Significantly improves the U-value of walls and ceilings, reducing heat loss and enhancing energy efficiency, which helps to lower heating bills.
  • By combining insulation and plasterboard into one unit, they minimise the overall thickness of the wall build-up compared to traditional multi-layer insulation systems.
  • As a single, pre-bonded board, installation is faster and simpler than fixing separate insulation and plasterboard layers, accelerating project timelines (drylining method).
  • Helps buildings meet stringent thermal performance requirements outlined in Approved Document L (Conservation of Fuel and Power) of the UK Building Regulations.
  • When properly installed, they help to minimise thermal bridging through the wall structure.
  • Suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects.

Applications

  • Internal wall lining.
  • Ceiling lining.
  • Attic conversions and dormer constructions.
  • Renovation and retrofit projects
  • Timber frame and masonry constructions.
