How to Properly Install Rockwool Twinroll Matt

When planning an insulation project, some areas within your home do require special and additional attention. Not solely because they are more susceptible to external effects, such as temperature fluctuations, moisture, damp, condensation, wind etc, but also because they can have significant impact on the overall thermal performance of your household. One such area that needs special attention is your loft space, regardless of whether you are dealing with only an empty space or you have plans on renovating or converting it into a living space. Another fact that should be mentioned is that applicable Building regulations set out the minimal values and thickness of an insulation material when insulating an attic. These are not only obligatory but can also help you achieve the best thermal and acoustic insulation result, which, among other things, also depends on the type and thickness of the material installed.

What we are here to do is present an innovative Rockwool insulation product that has more than one single purpose and can help you improve the thermal and sound insulation of your loft space, and all that in a few easy steps. Given below is the Rockwool Twin Roll installation guide.

About Rockwool Twinroll

Rockwool Twinroll is a mineral wool matt whose high density allows tight fit and substantial thermal and acoustic insulation improvement of attic spaces. Its biggest advantage is the fact that it can be used as a double 100mm layer to fit between the roof joists or as a single 200mm layer to be laid over the joists or existing insulation, in order of complying with applicable regulations. This is why it is applicable in both new build or refurbishment project, regardless of whether the insulation only needs to be upgraded or completely removed and replaced. It is pre-cut so it fits standard 400mm and 600mm joist widths which eases the handling and installation process. Its durability and strength also makes it cost-effective and another plus is the fact that no harmful gasses have been used in the manufacturing process which also makes it environmentally friendly.

Installation Process

  1. The first step in installing Rockwool Twin Roll should always be consulting applicable regulation and undertaking necessary measurements and insulation safety precautions. As upper mentioned, the recommended thickness of attic insulation is 300mm, which means that insulation will have to be added in two layers, 100mm layer added between the joists and another layer of 200mm added over. You should always conduct a thorough inspection of your loft space in order of determining whether you already have some insulation added and whether it is in good shape and needs to be removed and replaced or just upgraded. Then, you should precisely measure your attic space and use our online calculator in order of determining exactly how many rolls of the Rockwool Twin Roll insulation you are going to need.
  2. The product should be cut while still packed, depending on the joist width. The package has standard widths pre-drawn, so simply cut in accordance with the given outlines, at 400mm or 600mm widths, using a saw or a sharp knife. Once cut, you can unpack the product and unroll it between the joists (at 100mm thickness) and then use another layer to cover it (200mm thickness).
  3. One layer of the Rockwool Twin Roll is unrolled tightly between the joists. If you want to achieve best results, just make sure that there are no gaps between the joists and the material, but do not press it too hard, since this can affect its insulation power. For optimum efficiency, add another layer of 200mm over the existing insulation. If you should encounter any obstacles (such as a loft hatch), just cut around it.

Rockwool Insulation Guide

  1. If you are dealing with recessed downlights or any other service accommodated through the material, these must be properly covered with the rock wool covers as well and the insulation material cut around it, in order of avoiding potential gaps in the insulation. IMPORTANT NOTE: You need to take precausion and proper action to prevent any heat build up and creating a fire risk! For example, lighting fixtures cannot come into direct contact with insulation. Always consult your local Building Control and manufacturers' recommendations concerning these details.
  2. Finally, the loft space requires proper ventilation in order of achieving best insulation results during all seasons, why it is recommended that a gap of around 50mm should be left at the eaves. Since entire attic space should be properly covered with Rockwool Twin Roll insulation make sure to add the material to the loft hatch, exposed pipes and water tanks, whereas insulation should not be added directly under the water tanks in order of providing proper ventilation and air flow.
