British Gypsum Gypceiling - MF System
The GypCeiling MF System is a high-performance, concealed-grid suspended ceiling system designed to create a seamless, monolithic finish that is either skim-plastered or jointed, giving the appearance of a traditional solid ceiling. Unlike modular suspended ceilings (where the grid is visible and tiles are laid in), the MF system provides a smooth, continuous surface capable of meeting demanding criteria for fire safety, acoustics, and structural performance.

Key Features and Functionality
- Concealed Framework: The metal grid is entirely hidden once the plasterboard lining is installed and finished, delivering a premium, uninterrupted aesthetic.
- Performance: The system's strength lies in its ability to achieve high performance specifications. By selecting different Gyproc plasterboards (such as Gyproc FireLine for fire resistance or Gyproc SoundBloc for acoustic performance), the ceiling can achieve fire integrity ratings from 30 up to 120 minutes.
- Versatility: It is suitable for most internal drylining applications, accommodating complex designs, including bulkheads, curved ceilings, and changes in height.
- Plenum Space: It creates a void (the plenum) between the structural ceiling (soffit) and the finished ceiling line, allowing for the discreet routing of essential building services (ductwork, electrical cables, pipework, etc.).
The components that make up the metal framing system are collectively known as Gypframe sections, all typically made from cold-rolled steel and manufactured using British Gypsum's patented UltraSTEEL process for enhanced rigidity and screw retention.
- Primary Support Channel: Gypframe MF7 - The main load-bearing channel of the system. It runs in one direction and is suspended from the structural soffit.
- Ceiling Section: Gypframe MF5 - These channels run perpendicular to the MF7s. They form the secondary support grid to which the plasterboard lining is directly fixed. Often called the 'furring channel'.
- Perimeter Channel: Gypframe MF6 - An L-shaped channel fixed to the surrounding walls at the required ceiling height. It supports the ends of the MF5 Ceiling Sections where they meet the wall.
- Strap Hanger: Gypframe MF8 - Used to suspend the MF7 Primary Support Channels from the structural soffit. Often used for shallow ceiling voids.
- Soffit Cleat: Gypframe MF12 - Fixed directly to the structural soffit. It connects the MF8 Strap Hanger or MF7 Channel to the structure.
- Connecting Clip: Gypframe MF9 - Used to join the MF5 Ceiling Sections to the underside of the MF7 Primary Support Channels, creating the rigid two-way grid.
Once the Gypframe MF grid is installed and levelled, the following materials complete the system:
- Plasterboard: Single or multiple layers of Gyproc plasterboard are screwed directly to the underside of the MF5 Ceiling Sections. The type of board (Standard WallBoard, FireLine, SoundBloc, Moisture-Resistant, etc.) is chosen to meet the project's performance requirements.
- Fixings: Specialised Drywall Screws are used to fix the boards to the metal framework.
- Jointing and Finishing: The joints between the boards are covered with Gyproc Jointing Materials and tape (a process known as 'taping and jointing') to achieve a smooth surface, which is then typically painted or finished with a thin layer of Thistle Plaster (skim coat).
The result is a clean, flat ceiling that is fully certified and backed by the manufacturer's SpecSure® lifetime warranty when all components are used correctly.
