Kingspan Styrozone Installation Guidelines

How to Properly Install H 350 R and N 300 R

There are many options for ensuring adequate protection for your roofing system, where the choice will depend on a number of factors including the type of your roof (is it a flat or a pitched roof), some external factors (such as the climate, wind loads, drainage system, rainfall etc) as well as the overall result you are expecting. Some of the most popular solutions are inverted roof systems, which include a protective membrane placed on top of insulation and green roofs systems, which have many advantages over traditional roofs. If this is your choice, then you will need an efficient and reliable insulation product, such as Kingspan Styrozone insulation boards, especially designed for protected membrane flat roofs and green roofs.

Styrozone insulation boards are made from extruded polystyrene core with smooth and dense facing on both sides. Their insulation power, considerable comprehensive strength, moisture resistance and sustainability make them a perfect choice for different types of buildings and different applications in both residential and commercial sector. They are very easy to install, allowing easy inspection in due course, as well as the possibility of adding another layer of insulation in the process, if necessary. The boards will make sure that the entire roofing system is protected from the harmful effects of the weather and rainfall. The only thing remaining is proper installation, why we herewith offer some Kingspan Styrozone installation guidelines.

The boards are available with polyethylene packaging which will not ensure adequate protection from the weather, why they should be stored inside, preferably in a well ventilated space. If stored outside, additional protection must be provided, such as weatherproof tarpaulin or polythene sheeting. Make sure that the boards are not overexposed to sun or high temperatures since this can affect their dimensions and cause warping. The boards can be either cut with a fine tooth saw or shaped by using score and snap technique. For ensuring continuity of insulation, the boards should also be properly trimmed.

As upper mentioned, Kingspan Styrozone roof insulation boards can be used either as a part of a protected membrane systems or as insulation in green roofs. The boards are applicable to single-ply waterproofing membranes, mastic asphalt waterproofing systems and hot or cold liquid applied waterproofing systems.

Roof Insulation

On the other hand, if your choice is some type of green roof, you will notice that also these systems may require more detailed planning and an accurate design, they can have many benefits, including improved humidity, rainfall retention, acoustic insulation and a more aesthetically pleasing finish. Green roofs can be designed and constructed as extensive green roofs (which includes a shallow medium such as grass), semi-intensive roofs (which include denser medium such as shrubs or perennials) or intensive green roofs (which include a wider spectrum of plants such as shrubs or even smaller trees).

Kingspan Styrozone Installation

Once the waterproofing membrane has been properly installed and the roof is clean and dry, it is time to begin the Kingspan Styrozone insulation boards installation. The boards should be installed, starting from the roof access point, with their long edges at right angles to the edge or alternatively diagonally, whereas all the joints should be properly butted with no gaps at abutments. if you are installation insulation in more than one layer, then make sure that the joints of the board do not coincide in two adjacent layers. It is important that all the elements of the roofing system are adequately installed so that the same U value is maintained over the entire roof space. A distance of at least 300mm should be kept between the insulation upstand top and horizontal roof insulation bottom. Once the Styrozone boards have been installed, they need to be covered with some non-woven polyethylene membrane which needs to be turned up at the edge of the insulation and properly sealed under the flashing.

If you have decided to cover the membrane with some gravel ballast, make sure that it is installed as soon as possible, since the membrane needs to be protected from the influences of the weather at all times. The gravel ballast should be around 20-40mm in diameter, minimum depth of 50mm, round and washed. If you have opted for paving slab ballast, use at least 50mm thick paving slabs and 175mm paving slabs supports for adequate moisture control and drainage below the slabs. Use 20-40mm diameter round and washed gravel to fill the gaps between the upstands and paving slabs.

If you have opted for some green roof system, then some additional considerations should be taken in account when installing Kingspan roof insulation boards. If a root barrier is not provided by the waterproofing layer, it should be bonded or loose-laid to the membrane, turned up at the insulation edge and sealed under the flashing. Once the Kingspan insulation boards and the polyethylene membrane have been installed, a filtration layer should be installed on top and finally the growing medium added, whereas its depth will, among other things, depend on the wind loads.
