25mm STEICOflex 036 Inserts are designed to fill the "C" shaped void on either side of an I-joist web. By installing these inserts, you transform the irregular I-shape of the joist into a solid rectangular cross-section. This makes the subsequent installation of the main insulation layer much faster and more effective. STEICO flex 036 (Inserts for I-Joists)—also known as web insulation—is a specialized version of the flexible wood-fibre batt. While standard batts are thick for filling rafter voids, these inserts are thin, high-density strips designed specifically to fit into the recess of an I-joist web.

CHARCTERISTICS

  • The primary purpose of these inserts is to flush out the joist. This ensures that the main insulation (whether batts or blown-in STEICOzell) can be installed tightly against a flat surface, eliminating the air pockets that usually occur in the web area.
  • These inserts come in specific thicknesses tailored to match the flange width of the joist:
    • 18 mm inserts are used for joists with a 45 mm flange.
    • 25 mm inserts are used for joists with a 60 mm flange.
  • Despite being thin, the material is robust and has enough spring to be friction-fitted into the web recess on-site, staying in place without the need for mechanical fixings in most cases.
  • By filling the web void with wood fibre, you further reduce the already low thermal bridging of the I-joist, improving the overall U-value of the floor or roof.
  • Filling the drum-like voids in the joists helps dampen sound transmission through floor and ceiling structures.

APPLICATION

  • Prefabricated Elements: Often factory-fitted by timber frame manufacturers to create a solid feeling joist that is easier to insulate later.
  • On-Site Upgrading: Installed by contractors before blowing in loose-fill insulation to ensure a perfect, void-free fill.
  • Airtightness Detailing: Provides a flat surface at the ends of joists, making it much easier to tape membranes around the structural members.
