Profigips Straight PVC Expansion Joint Profile is a vital component for large-scale external wall insulation (EWI) and rendering projects. It provides a flexible bridge across structural expansion gaps in the substrate, allowing the render system to expand and contract safely during temperature fluctuations. This Flat Movement Joint Bead is designed for long, flat elevations where the render needs to be broken into manageable sections to prevent cracking.

CHARACTERISTICS

• The profile features a soft, elastic central strip made of high-quality synthetic rubber or soft PVC. This acts as a buffer, absorbing both compression and tension movements in the building's façade.
• Each side of the profile is equipped with a strip of alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh. These wings are embedded into the basecoat, ensuring the joint is physically tied into the rest of the reinforcement layer.
• The central membrane is completely impervious to water. This ensures that even when the joint is at maximum expansion, no moisture can reach the insulation boards or the underlying masonry.
• Once installed and rendered over, the profile provides a neat, straight vertical line. It eliminates the need for messy mastic or sealant joints which can degrade over time.
• The materials are chosen for their resistance to UV radiation and the harsh alkaline environment of cementitious or acrylic renders.

APPLICATION

• Long Elevations: Used on long walls (typically every 7 to 10 metres) to accommodate thermal movement.
• Structural Expansion Joints: Placed directly over existing movement joints in the brickwork or concrete frame of a building.
• Material Transitions: Ideal for use where the render system meets a different structural material, providing a flexible break between the two.

INSTALLATION

• It is critical that the flexible centre of the bead is positioned exactly over the movement gap in the masonry. If it is offset, the render may crack alongside the bead.
• Apply the basecoat to the insulation on both sides of the gap. Press the mesh wings into the wet mortar and use a trowel to bed them in firmly.
• Use masking tape to cover the central flexible strip before applying the final topcoat of render. This ensures that the movement zone remains free of debris and looks professional once the tape is removed.
• Use a spirit level or plumb line to ensure the joint is perfectly vertical, as any deviation will be very noticeable on a large, flat wall.
