Profigips PVC Expansion Joint Profile for Corners is a critical component for large-scale external wall insulation (EWI) and rendering projects. It is designed to bridge the structural gap between two walls at an internal 90-degree angle, allowing the building to move, settle, and expand without causing the render to buckle or crack.

CHARACTERISTICS

• The profile features a soft, high-elasticity PVC or rubberised centre. This acts as a bellows, absorbing structural movement in multiple directions.
• Like the APU beads we discussed, this profile comes with factory-bonded mesh wings. These are embedded into the basecoat on both sides of the corner to create a reinforced, continuous connection.
• The flexible membrane provides a watertight barrier. This ensures that even when the building moves and the joint opens or closes, moisture cannot penetrate the insulation layer or the substrate.
• Unlike flat expansion joints, this version is pre-formed to fit into internal corners, making installation much faster and ensuring a neat, symmetrical finish in a difficult area.
• The PVC is stabilised to resist sunlight and the alkaline nature of modern renders, ensuring the joint remains flexible and functional for the lifetime of the façade.

APPLICATION

• Internal Building Corners: Used where two structural sections of a building meet at an internal corner and a movement gap has been designed into the masonry.
• Large Multi-Storey Developments: Essential for tall buildings where thermal expansion and wind loading cause significant movement between different structural elements.
• Extensions: Ideal for the junction where a new extension meets an existing building, as these two structures will often settle at different rates.

INSTALLATION

• Ensure the central flexible part of the profile is aligned perfectly with the structural expansion gap in the masonry.
• Apply a layer of basecoat to both walls of the internal corner, then press the mesh wings into the wet mortar. Smooth the render over the mesh, but ensure the central flexible zone remains clean and free of render.
• When using multiple lengths for high walls, ensure the profiles are joined correctly to maintain a continuous vertical seal against water ingress.
• After the final topcoat is applied, the only visible part should be the neat, flexible strip in the very apex of the corner.
