Metal Frame Ceiling Systems
Metal frame ceiling systems, often referred to as suspended ceilings or false ceilings, are a versatile and widely adopted method for finishing the overhead space in commercial, industrial, and increasingly, residential buildings across the UK. They consist of a lightweight metal framework suspended below the structural slab or roof, creating a gap known as the plenum space. This framework is then used to support a variety of ceiling tiles or panels.
Common Types
- Exposed Grid (Lay-in): The metal grid is fully visible, and the tiles simply rest on the flange of the cross tees.
- Concealed Grid: The metal framework is hidden by the edges of the tiles, creating a monolithic, near-seamless appearance. Access is typically via specific, removable tiles.
- Clip-in Systems: Often used with metal tiles, these offer higher security and better resistance to air pressure changes, as the tiles clip firmly into the frame.
Key Components
- Main Runners (or Main Tees): These are the primary, load-bearing components of the grid, running the length of the room and suspended from the structural ceiling via hanger wires (or suspension wires).
- Cross Tees: These secondary members slot perpendicularly into the main runners to complete the supporting grid structure, forming the rectangular or square modules that hold the ceiling tiles.
- Perimeter Wall Angle (or Edge Trim): An L-shaped component fixed to the walls around the room's edge, supporting the ends of the main runners and cross tees where they meet the wall.
- Hanger Wires: Galvanised steel wires used to attach and level the main runners to the ceiling structure above.
- Ceiling Tiles/Panels: These rest within the grid system and form the visible, finished ceiling surface. They come in various materials, including mineral fibre, plasterboard, metal, or wood.
Primary Functions and Benefits
- Concealment and Aesthetics: They provide a neat, level finish, effectively concealing the structural elements, pipework, ductwork, and electrical cabling in the plenum space above.
- Access: The ceiling tiles are typically non-fixed and can be easily lifted out, providing simple access for maintenance, repairs, or reconfiguring services (like lighting, ventilation, or data cables) hidden within the plenum.
- Acoustics: Many ceiling tiles are designed to offer excellent sound absorption (reducing noise within the room) and sound attenuation (reducing sound transfer between adjacent spaces).
- Fire Protection: Specific systems and tiles are rated to enhance the fire resistance of the floor structure above.
- Thermal Performance: They can accommodate insulation materials placed above the tiles, improving the building's thermal efficiency.
- Integration of Services: The grid system makes it straightforward to integrate lighting fixtures, air conditioning vents (diffusers), and smoke detectors directly into the ceiling plane.
